Mom Fashion: Custom Styling Option with eShakti #review

Are you ready for a new spring dress?  I know a lot of the country is still dealing with snow and the ensuing slushy mess, but here is Oregon we are finally seeing springtime weather. This weekend we are seeing 70' days. Spring cleaning and new dresses go hand in hand. Thankfully eShakti has an awesome collection of Spring Dresses that can be customized, changing the length of the dress, or a slightly different neckline, different sleeves, and even removing the embellishments for the dress. I received a customized Spring Dress to review and share our experiences.
Last spring I reviewed a dress for eShakti and everyone loved it. This year my family (husband and boys) are the only ones that have seen it so far. I am wearing it for Easter activities on Easter Sunday to show it off.
I decided to go accessory shopping to pick up a few things to go with the dress (sunglasses, bracelet, shoes, etc) without overpowering the dress.
Mom Fashion

This dress features chambray cotton, shirt dress styling, pleated skirt, elastic back waist, and side pockets. The original dress was knee length and had different sleeves. I had the dress lengthened and the keyhole tied sleeves added. I like the length of the dress and the shirt styling of the top. Since I am not a size 6 and I'm somewhere in the middle height wise, I'm having trouble getting totally comfortable in the waist length  (I'm finding that with just about everything this season though.)
eShaktiI love how quickly the dresses are altered and shipped. When I received my dress the DHL driver who delivered it was running late and I was his last drop for the day, he was really nice about it being so late in the evening (something like 7:45 pm). I told him about the company and he said he would tell his girlfriend about it. I really love when the delivery drivers show some interest in the packages they are handling.
So as I'm sitting here typing this post, I comfortably wearing the dress (go for everyday living) and noticing a couple of the details in the styling; the gold buttons are actually buttonholes not just decoration (although I can't see using them since the elastic in the back makes it crazy easy to get in and out of), also the darts in the bust line of the dress are gentle enough in shaping that I don't feel crazy self conscience.
The color is a nice washes chambray rather than a dark denim which I appreciate and the chambray fabric is lightweight enough to not get crazy hot it.
This dress will be a fun addition even through the summer.
If you have never shopped with eShakti, their vintage style is fun, functional, and modest without seeming to old fashion, and since most of the the lengths can be altered you can adjust to fit your personality. New this season they even have a bridesmaid line of dress (many of those dresses can be worn after by just removing the underskirt).

Prices with eShakti are realistic not over the top; you can find dresses for under $75 easily. Lately, I've had trouble finding something I feel comfortable in that won't break the bank, so shopping with eShakti is a nice change.

Adventus MusIQ : A fun Computer based Piano and Music Teacher

My boys love music, at least learning music and trying new things, so when the opportunity arose to review Adventus MusIQ Homeschool program I was excited and so were the boys.  This computer based piano lesson program is available for the whole family and can be purchased as a monthly subscription for $10.95 a month.  You may also purchase a midi keyboard from Adventus to use with the program if you don't already have one.
We already have an older midi keyboard so we purchased a USB midi adapter plug to connect our keyboard to the program. I would recommend purchasing a new keyboard unless you are sure your keyboard will connect to your computer and is recognized. We had several technical issues going into the project as I have an older Yamaha midi keyboard. After several calls to various tech support numbers we finally got the correct drivers and set up to work with the program.

My boys were eager to start the program and learn as much as they could, so they were willing to help get the office set up with their computer and a spot of the keyboard.  We started with the Children's Music Journey Volume 1  with both boys. I was impressed with how quickly the program started into the keyboard use, within the first lesson the program was having the kids work on the keyboard. The graphics were engaging and the characters voices fun and ear pleasing. Both boys enjoyed the composers as the characters. With a variety of games to play, they found something to reinforce what they were learning and still have fun. While we slowed down a bit with music as the weather took us outside finally, they are still asking to work on 'Music Journey' as they call it. I asked each of the boys what their favorite game was and got the same answer (they don't usually agree on much) , Falling Leaves was their favorite, a play the note game. I thought they were actually all really fun. I set myself up an account so I could get to know the program a bit better as the boys were using it.  Sure wish there had been something like this when I was learning to read music and play the piano.

The above video from their website does an awesome job of showing you around the program. There are several other YouTube videos available showing various parts of the program as examples, I actually went through most of them when we were considering this program. It gave me some helpful things to consider before we jumped in.
The program is colorful , for some this can be a little too much, but this time around both my boys found it very inviting. I had been struggling with how to teach my boys piano and music reading and have been very happy with this program. I am even shopping for a newer keyboard to replace ours so the boys don't have to deal with the technical issues that pop up every so often. With 3 volumes I know the boys will have a lot of music learning ahead of them. We may even look to the next program from Adventus to continue their music education.

Essentials in Writing: a DVD based Grammar and Writing program

Essentials in Writing Grade 4 photo EIW4thgrade_zpsc83b7310.jpgI love writing so it has been a struggle for me to have a child that hates writing as much as my 4th grader does. He is a wonderful storyteller and has a wonderful grasp of language usage but when faced with putting the sentences together he freezes. Thankfully we received Essentials in Writing to try with him. We decided to stay with the 4th grade level and see how it goes.
I wanted to make sure Cameron had a firm understanding of the grammar elements so I had him watch the first 4   lesson videos before moving on to the sentences and writing lessons.  We found a couple of issues so we spent some extra time on those issues before moving further. I would rather slow the pace and master the concept then move ahead and struggle more later on.
Having the worksheets as a downloaded .pdf file made it possible to actually print an extra copy of the pages we had trouble with to work on a second time.

The DVDs played easily on our computer and made it simple to navigate as we moved around the lessons. Having 5 lessons show on the screen at a time kept Cameron from getting over whelmed. I did have Daddy watch a couple lessons with Cameron for a second parent interaction. Daddy had trouble watching and listening to the video as he is a sound engineer and the levels which the video was recorded at made for an off sounding environment. Since Mommy and Cameron don't have issue with the sound as much as Daddy we did ok with it. Although I have to admit there were elements of the lecture style that didn't sit well with me, but Cameron enjoyed the DVDs as much as a child who isn't a fan of writing can. He didn't argue or put up too much attitude when told his writing was next.

The DVD set with .pdf download retails for $40 and if printing is an issue for you, they also sell a printed copy of the workbook for $20.00
Here is a sample of 4th grade  program. You can also download a copy of the Table of Contents and samples of the worksheets from the same page.
While we will continue to use this program for the time being, I'm not 100 % sold on the format. I'm still trying to find the perfect program for my 4th grader, we will combine elements of this program with our Montessori style learning to hopefully cover it all in a way he can retain it.  We are always adapting our classroom / homeschool to fit their learning styles.

1,2,3 Touch Math a hands on approach to 2nd grade math

We have been using a variety of hands on math products looking for a good fit for our 2nd grader. Currently we are using Touch Math's  2nd grade program.

2nd photo 2nd_zps507a9062.jpg

With a variety of grade levels (preK- upper Elementary) Touch Math's Homeschool program is a comprehesive hands on program.
So far in about 4 1/2 weeks we have covered 2 1/2 modules with in the first Unit.
Since it didn't line up exactly with our usual Math program , we found some things to be easy and some of the "new" concepts to be just challenging enough for Nathan. Our plan is to continue on and finish Unit A and assess where we are and how we are all feeling about the program. Nathan wants to jump ahead to Unit D to work with Time, Money, and Measurements and I will probably let him to keep him engaged, if we continue with the program after than we can go back and do Unit B and C to finish off the year.
The recommendation for time on the subject is 2.5 times your child's age. Nathan is 7 so we are spending between 15 and 20 minutes on Math 3-4 days a week. That gives us enough time to go over a module and do 1-2 pages thoroughly.  We have been using the program as is with only slight adjustments to the order in which we touch the numbers, especially 7 and 9, we found the order in which the touches where counted to be more frustrating than it was worth for Nathan. We adjusted the location of the single and double touches to match up with the way we write the numbers to keep consistency across the curriculum.
We  have been using the Flip Cards with each of the modules as a review, although Nathan isn't a big fan of flash card style learning when working on math facts, he would much rather me just ask him the facts. We even started having him orally recite the fact family; for example I give him the fact: 7+6=?, he says 13 and then says 6-7=13 13-7=6, 13-6=7 which is encouraging him to remember the fact families and making the connection between addition and subtraction facts.
The flip cards we received with the program match up to various units within the 2nd grade program. There are 3 sets of cards per unit so I was trying to figure out how to store 12 sets of flash cards so there could be used but still kept nice in their boxes (wishful thinking I know),
I finally found a basket to store the flip cards in so there are easy to get at. All 12 sets fit in the basket and as we open a new set I can rotate them around so the ones we are using can be found on top. I think I will tape up the boxes a bit to make them a little sturdier. For now though, this basket will fit on our Montessori shelf and be easy to get to.   The boys are working on some game style activities using the cards, as we come up with successful ones I will post some to share.
The other manipulatives we received we have been using some of the time, the number cards have been a fun colorful way to build larger numbers and work on place values without the normal color clues the boys are use to having.  We have also been using the form numbers as reminders for how to write the numbers. For now, since these manipulatives are used more for fun , we are storing them in the box they came in and keeping them available for the boys to use for creative learning activities.

If you are interesting in trying this out, you can download samples of the Touch Math program under each grade. The units can be purchased individually for $59.95 as a download (pdf including the teachers guide with the worksheets, or you can purchase all 4 units and save for $199.95.  Honestly I don't know if my budget would allow me to purchase this for just 1 child. We have enjoyed working with the program, and have seen positives in the way the program is helping Nathan. It has been a blessing to receive the program for reviewing. If price were not a factor I would highly recommend the download units. The various manipulatives are not required to use the program but do ad fun elements.

Teaching boys for their delight

Check out the fun with the Schoolhousereview Crew's 5 Days of Teaching Creatively Day 1

I have talked about our eclectic style in many posts and mentioned our Montessori homemade materials, but some of the best things about teaching the boys are the hands on activities they like to do.
Both of the boys love to build things, give a kid a hammer and a few nails and watch out. Nathan loves building anything he can, he especially loves the wooden kits he can work on it the shop. He is learning skills as well as staying focused on following directions. The skills he has gained from the kit building has led to him crating a building a shelf out of scraps (he is going to hang it on the way in his room when we are done moving things around). He also loves creating metal art and working with concrete. Working in the shop with the various materials incorporates more subjects than just fun.  Math skills including measuring , fractions, and some geometry are easy to find in the shop. Reading for directions as well as labels is as common. Cooperative skills are also key in the shop because sharing Daddy's tools with your brother and Daddy are critical.
Shop time is fun, but there are so many other fun activities related to school, Legos or similar building kits are always fun and open up the door for learning not only cooperation, following directions, spatial skills, and basic counting skills, we have also found engineering skills as well as a creative outlet when we don't have the right piece have emerged from building blocks.
I  am adding more options for the boys, I think of them as electives , they think of them as fun, we are all happy.  Upcoming activities include a unit study on Nascar from Hands of a Child, tangram activities, sentence games including Mad Libs card game, and a couple of building projects in our mud room to store canning jars.  Both boys are also asking for more computer programming lessons thanks to a product we are currently reviewing and creative writing activities similar to our playmobil story game so we will be adding more of those activities to work on spelling, grammar, and story tell

While we will still have our core 3 (Handwriting/spelling, Math, Bible) we will continue to have the boys take the lead in many of the remaining subjects and we will still have lots of stories and amazing books available to explore history, science, and the world around us at their disposal as well as a variety of video based subjects.

Sunday Scripture 3/10

Genesis 1:26
And God said,  Let us make man in our image,  after our likeness ;

It really is that simple. We were created in God's image, if more would remember that and reflect that image.
